The Greater Manchester Police have awarded a contract to BT to provide a converged Internet Protocol telephony solution from Nortel Networks.
The Greater Manchester Police is replacing its traditional switched telephony network of approximately 40 different PBXs with a flexible converged solution.

This new solution will include two Nortel Networks Succession 1000M IP telephony systems that will provide centralized communication services and support for nearly 5,500 IP phones distributed across 120 sites.

The solution is being implemented by BT over a Nortel Networks converged data network using Nortel Networks Passport 8600 and Nortel Networks BayStack 460.

In addition, BT will implement Nortel Networks Symposium call center solution for four non-emergency contact centers and Nortel Networks CallPilot unified messaging system for 5,500 internal users.

"Speed and reliability of police communication networks are key for us," said Colin Carey, assistant IT director, Greater Manchester Police. "Nortel Networks IP telephony and switching solutions will give us the increased flexibility required to offer more effective police operations across the area covered by the police force."

The Greater Manchester Police is the second largest police force in the U.K., covering 500 square miles and 10 metropolitan boroughs.
